Cultivating Community Since 2020
First sprouts Spring of 2021.
During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic the Papillion Community Foundation (PCF) identified an increasing need for sustainable, healthy food sources in Papillion and the entire Sarpy County area. Local food pantries expressed a greater need for assistance than ever before. PCF realized the unique opportunity to make a lasting impact. Our mission is to identify, develop and support. We identified a problem, developed a plan and from the ground up we are creating the Papillion Urban Garden (PUG). Food insecurity does not discriminate. We reached out from Maine to Washington researching existing food programs, business models, and project sustainability. Inspired by the success of these organizations and adding a touch of local flare and ingenuity our first sprouts will grow in the Spring of 2021.
Papillion Urban Garden will be a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, starting in 2022. The first year everything grown will be donated. Once the CSA begins in 2022, Fifty-one percent of what we grow will be donated to families in need. Forty-nine percent of what we grow will be available to individuals in the community who pledge to support the farm operation. As a stakeholder in PUG you not only have the peace of mind of getting to know your farmer but also direct access to fresh locally grown Nebraska produce.
Phase 1 - address food insecurity in our community. "Get growing!"
Phase 2 - grow the farm in its permanent home and CSA program will begin
Phase 3 - commercial-grade community kitchen, shelter building
Phase 4 - incorporate aquaponic, hydroponic, aquaculture and geothermal greenhouses.
